"So anyway, he totally looked like he was about to kiss her!"
"OMG, seriously?!"
"She must be doing SOMETHING to get him to pay attention to her like that."
"Oh, Shush! It's Gil!"
Gilbert passed the cluster of girls silently, as if his mind was on something else. His mouth was shaped into a warm, soft grin, a look of his they had never seen before. One of the girls, a slightly tall freshmen with long, dark brown hair and light almond eyes watched him go by, interest in her gaze.
"Hey, Francis! Antonio!" Gilbert called to his friends. Francis and Antonio stood at the far end of the hall behind a row of lockers, talking quietly. Seeing Gilbert, Francis smiled and waved him over.
"Oui, mon ami?"
Gilbert paused to catch his breath before starting uneasily, "Oh… Um, well, I just wanted to let you guys know… I won't be hosting my yearly birthday bash tomorrow evening..."
Antonio's eyes widened in disbelief as Francis raised an eyebrow in curiosity. Gilbert cringed when they both said in unison,
"Why?!"
"Um… well… turns out I've made some… special plans…"
"Ooooh…" Antonio grinned and leaped at his friend, wrapping his arms around Gilbert's neck and squeezing gently. "So, you're going to ditch us to hang out with your chica, eh?" Antonio laughed.  Francis stroked his scruffy chin in mock contemplation.
"Oui, it seems our dear friend has found someone more worthy to be with on his birthday."
"Aw, C'mon guys! You know I love you two! It's just..."
"Eh, you don't have to explain amigo." Antonio interrupted, moving his arm over Gilbert's mouth. "We know how special she is to you." Francis nodded in agreement. Gilbert grinned, grabbed hold of Francis's shirt and of Antonio's hair and pulled them close into a hug.
"Gott, I love you guys!" Gilbert declared. They stood in their awkward hug for a moment longer, until finally Gilbert pulled away from the two.
"Okay… well now that that's over, I'd better go." He said in slight disappointment.
"Alright, man. We'll see you Monday then, Si?"
"Yeah, Monday!" Gilbert confirmed as he made his way back to the main hallway. He grinned and stuck out his tong at his friends, who both jokingly held up a middle finger in response. Once he turned back around, the girl who had kept his eyes on him the whole time broke from her group and walked over to Francis and Antonio.
"…oh… Graciela! What the heck are you doing here?!" Antonio huffed as he caught sight of his sister. Graciela Carriedo rolled her eyes and flipped her hair in annoyance.
"It's called being popular, big bro. I know guys who'd KILL to do some lying for me." She smirked. Antonio just sighed and covered his face with his hand. Francis on the other hand studied Graciela from head to toe, to chest then back to head with understanding. Noticing him, Graciela frowned and crossed her arms over her chest before looking back at her brother.
"Anyway, I just so happened to see you with Gilbert. His birthday is tomorrow, Si? I want you to give him something for me."
"Sorry Gracie, I'm not a messenger boy. And unfortunately…" Antonio dropped his voice into a tone of mock pity, "He's already been taken. So sorry."
Graciela blushed and narrowed her eyes. "S-Shut up! … And what do you mean?! It… it wasn't like I was going to-"
"Stop pretending already, sis. You've had a stupid crush over him ever since he and I were little Niño's. You should have guessed he'd be with someone by now."
"So what if I had ever HAD a crush on him?! Don't you think I was just trying to be, like, NICE or something?!" Graciela twirled a strand of her hair with her index finger in frustration. After a second she let out a breath and asked innocently, "So… Who's he with…?"
"None of you-"
"Mattie Williams. A pretty decent femme for him." Francis purred, interrupting his friend. Antonio glared at him as Graciela seemed to think about the name.
"Mattie Williams…? I don't think I've ever heard of her…" That was a lie. Graciela definitely knew who she was. The girl had been the topic of many sophomore conversations. But her brother didn't need to know that. Neither did his stupid friend. "She sounds like a no-body." That was true. From what Graciela had been overhearing, Mattie had only one real friend, and barely said a word to anyone until the beginning of this year. And she definitely hadn't been thought about until now.
"Graciela! Don't be so rude." Antonio growled.  Graciela rolled her eyes again.
"Whatever. So, now that I've been completely rejected by the Spanish delivery service, I guess I'm going to have to give Gilbert his present myself." She sneered, turning around. As she walked away she yelled over her shoulder,
"See you later, 'Toni! Bye Pervert!"
Francis scrunched his eyebrows and looked at his friend.
"She thinks you're a pervert…?"
"She was talking to you, Francis."

Mattie sighed and looked up at the cloudy sky above her head. She shivered as a cool breeze traveled up her short skirt, something she would have definitely love to go without that day if she had had any other clean bottoms. She wore a long sleeved, light yellow shirt with a sunflower in the bottom corner under her jacket. Her denim skirt was black and hung a few inches above her partly sock covered knees. Her socks were white with thin, black stripes and tucked into her brown boots. The attire was something she hadn't planned on, and felt uncomfortable in in the chilly weather.
But nonetheless there she stood leaning against the wall of a small building that held bathrooms for park visitors. Where she stood Mattie could look through the bare trees and see the stage set up for the four hour performance that would start in the next two hours. Or, that's what it would be if it was still three. Mattie checked her wristwatch again and fidgeted as she read the time.

3:45

Forty-five minutes had gone by, and still no sign of Gilbert. Mattie's feet were growing numb from being in the same position for so long in such weather. The sun barely showed through the clouds, so the cold only grew harder to bear the later it got. Fortunately, Mattie had a way to warm up just a little every now and then. All she had to do was close her eyes and memories of Gilbert's body pressed close to hers would surface, sending red-hot heat from her face and into her chest. But the cold still pressed in hard and cruel.
"Mattie!"
Mattie opened her eyes and glanced around expectantly, frowning when the only person she saw near her only seemed to worsen the situation.
"H-hey… Ivan…"
Ivan smiled and walked up to Mattie. He was dressed in his usual black trench coat. He also wore light blue jeans and a red-checked scarf. Noticing Mattie shiver he smiled a little brighter and took off his scarf, not knowing she only shivered from him being near.
"O-oh, it's okay! I-I'm fine!" Mattie stammered as Ivan held his scarf out to her.
"Are you sure? I mean, you're not really dressed for warmth…"
"I'm fine!" Mattie insisted, feeling relief when Ivan just shrugged and wrapped his scarf back around his neck.  He then lapsed into silence.
Mattie blinked and looked down at her wrist watch again. Ten minutes to four. Ugh. She sighed and closed her eyes. When she opened them again she froze as Ivan suddenly appeared in front of her, only inches away. He looked at her wrist watch then back at her eyes.
"Waiting for someone?" He asked his voice absent of emotion. Mattie nodded and replied shakily.
"Y-yes… I'm waiting for my… f-for Gilbert…"
"Hmm…" Ivan mumbled. He stepped closer, causing Mattie to inch back against the wall. "He's late…?"
"A-ah, N-n-no! Not at a-all! I'm j-just-" she stopped talking as Ivan leaned in closer and placed his hands on the wall to Mattie's sides, closing her in.
"I-i-i-Ivan…?! W-w-what…?"
"You know, Mattie…" Ivan interrupted, looking at Mattie with cold, predator like eyes. Mattie shivered at the chilling seriousness in his voice. "I don't think Gilbert is right for you…"
Mattie practically stopped breathing and stared at Ivan dumfound. Finally she gulped and managed to utter,
"h-huh…?"
"You two…" Ivan tilted his head, contemplating. "You two are so… different. I think, being with him… you're only going to run into heart break, da." He smiled and stepped away, now that he had her attention.
"But… I don't… u-understand…" Mattie whispered hoarsely, slight fear rising in her chest. Ivan just shrugged, taking another step back.
"Just… think about it, da? And when you come to a conclusion…" His eyes bore into Mattie's "Don't hesitate to think of me."
Mattie watched him leave, her feelings now a mixture of distraught confusion. She shivered and pulled her jacket tighter around her. Ivan was definitely one mysterious boy.
"Mattie!"
Mattie looked up warily, expecting to see Ivan again, feeling relieved when she spied Gilbert jogging toward her.  She blushed as she made out an excited smile on his lips. He wore his black hoodie unzipped and over a grey and white striped polo shirt. He also wore dark blue jeans, dark red sneakers, and strangely, pink earmuffs. Seeing her smile, Gilbert grinned and pulled another pair of earmuffs out of his pocket.
"I should probably explain…" he laughed once he arrived at Mattie's side. "But first…" He leaned in and kissed her on the cheek, making her blush lightly. "Sorry for being so late. Second is, the reason I was so late has to do with these." He held the extra pair of earmuffs out to Mattie until she took them and put them on.
"My mom… She's got some… problems. She decided my brother and I would catch colds with our ears so 'exposed'. So… she went out and bought a crap load of these things!" He exclaimed, rolling his eyes. "So now I'm stuck wearing pink earmuffs till spring. Anyway, since she bought so many, I thought I might as well bring you a pair… since… well… I've never seen you wearing any…"
Mattie giggled and adjusted her new pair of ear protection. "W-well, thank you! It really does help… a-and… for the record…" Mattie blushed a little redder and hooked her arm through Gilberts. "I think you look good with pink."
Gilbert chuckled and walked alongside Mattie as she began walking to the stage, which now had a small crowd around it. It was already set up; the band that would be playing already on stage tuning their instruments. Mattie stopped at the edge of the crowd.
"So… who's playing?" Gilbert asked.
"I-I think they call themselves Skillet…"
As she spoke the lights outside the stage perimeter dimmed as one of the musicians, a tall man, walked to the mike.
"Hey everyone!" He smiled at the crowd. "We're just about ready so, if you don't mind…" Another man with a guitar flew his hand across the strings, sending a blast of sound into the air. "Give it up, for Skillet!"
The crowd starting cheering as the band launched into song. A few people jumped up and down and pumped their fists with enthusiasm. Mattie tapped her foot, finding the song tuneful, and pretty good. Beside her Gilbert nodded to the beat, also finding it agreeable.
After only an hour the crowd around the stage had grown large and pulsated from all the people jumping around and waving fists. The band continued to play, seeming oblivious to the cold sweat that dripped from their faces from singing so much. It wasn't until another two hours later they band stopped for a more than ten-minute break.
As the band left the stage Mattie gasped as a foot stomped on hers. For the first time she noticed how choked with people the area had gotten, and felt claustrophobia creep in on her. She grabbed hold of Gilberts arm uneasily after another person pushed passed her to make his way closer to the stage. Seeing her uneasiness Gilbert leaned down.
"Do you want to go somewhere else?" He asked. Mattie was about to decline, knowing Gilbert was really enjoying the concert, when an idea struck her. With a smile she nodded and pulled Gilbert with her out of the crowd. She walked along the edge of the large group of people until she found what she was looking for.
"How about we watch from up there?" she asked, gesturing to the tall oak tree towering over her and Gilbert. Its branches were thick and sturdy, and spaced at a perfect measurement that they could watch the concert from many different spots in the tree. Gilbert grinned and nodded.  Mattie walked up to the tree excitedly, and then stopped when she remembered what she was wearing.
"M-maybe you should climb up first…" She said innocently, moving aside. Gilbert blushed.
"S-sure…" He climbed up the tree quickly, like a squirrel, not stopping until he found a branch sturdy enough to hold them both close to the top of the tree. Mattie climbed up after him, taking his hand when he held it out to her. Gilbert wedged himself against the truck so Mattie could lean against him and not set them off-balance.
Mattie sighed and looked up at the first few stars of the night, then back at Gilbert. He watched her with gentle eyes, before smiling that warm, tender smile that sent a chill down Mattie's spine. He leaned closer and kissed her on the cheek again before leaning back against the truck so Mattie could lean her head against his chest.
"… This has been a wonderful birthday…" Gilbert breathed. Mattie blinked and looked up slowly.
"W-what…?"
Gilbert flinched, realizing what he just said. "Oh, uh… well… t-todays my birthday…"
"I-it is?! W-why didn't you tell me? I… I could have put together a n-nicer date o-or worn something more f-festive or… o-or…" Mattie stammered. Gilbert laughed and pulled Mattie closer to him.
"I'm sorry. I didn't tell you 'cause I knew you'd probably want to do something special. I just wanted to do something you wanted to do. That way I wouldn't feel like you felt it was your responsibility or something to make today better. Although, truthfully…" Gilbert leaned his head on Mattie's. "You couldn't have made it any more special to me than it already is."
Mattie flushed bright red. She opened her mouth to say something, but was cut off by the lead singer speaking into his mike.
"Alright guys, sorry but this is it. We had a wonderful time playing for everyone and hope to see you guys at one of our concerts! So to close, we'll play a special song, one we've just recently composed. So thanks again for coming!"

I see you standing here
But you're so far away

Starving for your attention
You don't even know my name

Mattie blinked and looked up at Gilbert. He stared at her with those gentle, tender eyes again.

You're going through so much
But I know that I,
Could be the one

To hold you.

Every single day
I find it hard to say I
Could be yours alone.

You will see someday
All along the way
I was yours to hold

I was yours to hold.

Gilbert shifted slightly, bringing his face closer to Mattie's. "It sounds like… He's singing about me and you." He said quietly. Mattie blushed and pressed her face farther into Gilberts chest. She hesitated a moment, before looking back up at Gilbert with teary eyes.
"…Yeah…"

I see you walking by
Your hair always hung in your face.

Gilbert brushed some of Mattie's hair from her face, wiping some of her tears with it gently.

I wonder why you've been hurting
I wish I had some way to say

You're going through so much

Gilbert leaned forward and kissed Mattie's forehead.

Don't you know that I

He slid his lips down Mattie's face to her cheek and pressed down softly.

Could be the one

With his thumb he traced Mattie's jawline slowly.

To hold you?

Gilbert pressed his lips against Mattie's, who kissed back gently, shyly. He wrapped his arms around her securely to protect them both from falling.

Every single day
I find it hard to say I
Could be yours alone.

You will see someday
All along the way
I was yours to hold

I was yours to hold.

Below the couple on the other side of the tree, Ivan leaned against the bark and watched the sky with sightless eyes, a small, sad smile on his lips. 'Those two', he thought, 'could really go far.'

I'm stretching but you're just out of reach
You should know
I'm ready when you're ready for me.

And I'm waiting for the right time
For the day I catch your eye
To let you know

That I'm yours to hold.

A few feet from the tree, Graciela slouched on a bench, her head in her hands after seeing the couple's kiss. She definitely had some competition. Graciela clenched her teeth as tears rolled off her cheeks into her hands.

Every single day
I find it hard to say I
Could be yours alone.

You will see someday
That all along the way I
Was yours to hold

I was yours to hold.

Gilbert leaned back slowly, and whispered with a strong voice. "I love you, Mattie."

Every single day
I find it hard to say I
Could be yours alone.

You will see someday
That all along the way I
Was yours to hold

I was yours to hold.

Mattie smiled and leaned against Gilbert.

I'm stretching but you're just out of reach.

I'm ready when you're ready for me.

"I love you too."
